The Kason CROSS-FLO dewatering sieve in action

Kason Corporation’s industrial processing solutions are available in Canada through Firing Industries Ltd., including the CROSS-FLO static dewatering sieve. This device provides low-maintenance, zero-energy removal of solids from wastewater at extremely high rates; it is a single-deck model with a screen-deck incline that users can field-adjust for optimum performance.

One produce supplier used this Kason product to ease the burden on the wastewater-treatment facility in Jessup, MD – and later to provide a hog-feed supply to farmers.

Success with the Coanda effect

The Class Produce Group sells fresh-cut fruits and vegetables to food-service customers across the eastern United States. Washing produce generates an average of 105,980 litres a day of wastewater containing total suspended solids – mostly peelings, seeds, and debris – which caused issues for the organization and Howard County by clogging pumping systems. The County ordered Class to find a new solution to reducing solids being piped to the treatment facility.

Six years ago, the corporation installed a Kason CROSS-FLO sieve to deal with the issue, by removing solids continuously through its inclined screening deck fitted with a stainless steel profile wire screen. Available via Firing Industries, CROSS-FLO has screen slots oriented perpendicularly to the direction of wastewater flow, thereby accelerating the flow rate of water through the screen according to the Coanda effect – a physics principle in which liquids remains in contact with a convex surface, boosting its rate of passage through the screen.

A key benefit: no motor or labour was necessary, as the fluid flowed over and through the wire screen, with solids falling naturally from the screen into the hopper. Previously, pumps were pushing solids-laden wastewater upwards from the underground Class plant, resulting in blockage. It cost up to $10,000 per incident in material, downtime, and labour to shut down production to clear the pumps. The CROSS-FLO eliminated this drawback.

Since 2018, the CROSS-FLO has eased the burden on Class and on Howard County’s wastewater-treatment plant. The process now creates a steady supply of hog feed that a local farmer picks up every day.
