Safety Cable, created by Bergen and General Electric

Bergen Cable has remained a major provider of industrial cable since 1942, with an illustrious corporate history. A landmark in the supplier’s 82-year history of success is its role in the development and creation of Safety Cable. This solution serves aerospace customers as a convenient alternative to lock wire. As an essential product in this sector for more than 35 years, Safety Cable is the safest, most cost-efficient, most easy-to-install option in the cable market for faster fastener retention.

Higher quality, lower cost

This unique cable solution was developed in collaboration with General Electric Aircraft Engines in 1987. The two corporations tested this cable at the GE facility and found it slashed installation time in half, while offering higher quality with lower assembly costs. Since then, Safety Cable has become the industry standard for fastener retention. The four main elements of Safety Cable:

  • Safety Cable tool – cable tools provided with diameters of 0.022, 0.032, or 0.04 and nose lengths of three, five, or seven inches. Safety Cable tools come with 360-degree rotating noses that allow simpler use in nonstandard positions.
  • Safety Cable – lengths from nine to 36 inches. Materials include 304 or 321 stainless, Inconel 600 for high-temperature or non-magnetic applications, and Inconel 625 for anti-corrosion protection. The Bergen team recommends self-looping cables for fasteners without holds and carries filler washers for fasteners with oversized lock-wire holes.
  • Ferrules – available as a spring-loaded magazine containing 50 ferrules, which are available in the same materials and diameters that the cable is. Also available are elongated ferrules that enable sufficient retention of fasteners with limited clearance.
  • Accessories – torque blocks for periodic verification of tool settings, to ensure correct tool function immediately; precision torque wrenches, for use with torque blocks; cutter gripper tools, for removing cable and lock wire safely and efficiently; and electronic load testers, for tension and ferrule pull-off tests.
