Bergen Cable is a source of pre-formed wire rope.

For more than eight decades, Bergen Cable has helped businesses succeed with its unparalleled range of cable and wire-rope products. Pre-formed wire rope, set apart by how its individual wires and strands are pre-formed into a specific shape before final assembly, is an alternative solution from Bergen. As a customized option that customers can adjust according to their specific requirements, pre-formed wire rope comes with its own unique benefits.

Eliminates tendency of wire straightening

Although the terms “cable” and “wire rope” are often used as though they were synonyms, wire rope specifically refers to rope that has a diameter higher than 3/8 of an inch; ropes with smaller diameters are called cables or cords. The process of making pre-formed wire rope eliminates the tendency for wires and strands to straighten by keeping them in the proper positions.

Bergen Cable cites five key customer advantages of investing in its pre-formed wire rope:

  1. Users can cut pre-formed wire rope without the seizing that is required to maintain the structure of standard wire rope.
  2. The broken rope ends remain twisted, as opposed to the untwisting of the ends of typical wire rope; this boosts the salvation value of broken rope.
  3. This kind of wire rope is significantly free of liveliness and twisting tendencies. This makes installation and handling simpler, while also reducing the risk of damage to the wire rope from fouling or kinking. Pre-forming allows more general use of long-lay and wire-core constructions.
  4. Removing internal stress increases resistance to bending fatigue, and this expands service in applications in which the ability to withstand bending is mandatory. This also allows the use of wire rope with larger outer wires when more wear resistance is required.
  5. Outer wires wear thinner before breakage, while broken wire ends do not protrude from rope to injure workers, nick and distort adjacent wires, or wear sheaves and drums. As broken ends do not porcupine, they are not as conspicuous as those on standard wire rope. More care is required during inspection of worn rope, to determine its condition.
